The Horizon Blue GE230: What Happens When a Client Trusts Their Instincts and So Do We
Colour is one of the first conversations we have with a client commissioning a custom Mercedes G-Wagen, and usually one of the more straightforward ones. The Horizon Blue GE230 was a different kind of conversation entirely. The client arrived knowing exactly what he wanted, and the certainty of his vision was, in equal measure, surprising and energising for the team.

The Brief
The client came in with one instruction. Blue throughout, interior matched to the exterior, every surface without exception. It is an unconventional choice, the kind that many clients consider and then, over time, talk themselves out of. This client did not waver, and a brief that clear gives the team the room to focus entirely on execution rather than interpretation.
Most interior choices follow a familiar palette. Tan leather, dark leather, something neutral and considered. Blue throughout is a different proposition entirely, and one that requires a level of conviction most people do not arrive with. This client did.

The Team's Reaction
The brief was unexpected, and the team welcomed it immediately. Blue interiors sit well outside the usual scope of what clients bring to Arcade, and that made it exactly the kind of brief the team finds most interesting to work with.
Arcade COO Felix Timmer had a reference point for it. Visits to the Mercedes-Benz museum had left a strong impression, specifically the interiors from the 1970s, where colour was used with a playfulness and confidence that has largely disappeared from automotive design since. The Horizon Blue GE230 felt like an opportunity to bring some of that back. Far from being an eccentric departure, the brief was in many ways a return to something the original designers would have understood immediately.
The Craft Decision
The client chose Steel Blue for the interior himself, a shade richer and deeper than the Horizon Blue of the exterior, so that when the doors open the two colours sit against each other rather than bleeding into one another. It was a considered choice arrived at through an understanding of how the two shades would interact in daylight, and in particular how the contrast would read when the doors were opened from outside the car.

One of the most significant contributions Arcade made to the overall specification was the colour of the soft top. Arcade COO Felix Timmer advised on beige rather than blue, with the awareness that matching a soft top to the body colour risks the car sitting too close to a factory finish, losing the sense of something considered and specific that defines a bespoke G-Wagen commission. In automotive design, these are the decisions that quietly determine the character of the finished result. The client agreed, and the beige soft top became the element that prevented the exterior from reading as a single unbroken block of colour, giving the build the visual balance it needed.
The exterior runs in Horizon Blue. The interior in Steel Blue. The soft top in beige. Three colours arrived at through a combination of the client's own conviction and Arcade's understanding of how those choices would interact once the car was complete.

The Car in the World
In daylight, particularly in a coastal setting, the exterior shade comes into its own. It is a colour that changes depending on the light it finds itself in, from something quietly considered in shade to something that stops people in full daylight. Horizon Blue is not a conventional choice for a classic G-Wagen, and that is precisely the point.

Commission a Build
Those considering a custom G-Wagen build of their own are invited to begin a conversation with the Arcade team. Every build starts with the same questions: how do you want to use this car, and what should it feel like to be inside it.
